2.Sukhna Lake. Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh, india, is a reservior at the foothills (shivalik hills ) of the Himalayas This 3 km² rainfed lake was created in 1958 by damming the Sukhna Choe, a seasonal stream coming down from the Shivalik Hills. Originally the seasonal flow entered the lake directly causing heavy siltation . To check the inflow of silt, 25.42 km² of land was acquired in the catchment area and put under vegetation. In 1974, the Choe was diverted and made to bypass the lake completely, the lake being fed by three siltation pots, minimising the entry of silt into the lake itself.
Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh is man-made, created by damming the seasonal stream that comes down from the Shivalik Hills, Sukhna Choe. Le Corbusier’s greatest creation, his vision for Sukhna lake still lives on. Carrying on his legacy, till date no motor boats are allowed in the lake and neither are any motor vehicles on the promenade.
Le Corbusier had predicted that people would be drawn to Sukhna Lake for the care of their body and spirit. True to his words, even before the sun dawns over the lake and well after it sets, people of all ages can be seen walking, jogging, sprinting on the promenade, outlining the lake’s perimeter. Distances of 500 meter, 1 km and so on are marked on the promenade, so you can easily map the distance covered by you.
While the lake has fish, but fishing out here is restricted. With migratory birds like Crane, Stork and Siberian Duck having discovered the delights of Sukhna Lake, it has been declared a protected national wetland.

3.Open Hand Monument. ..
Open Hand Monument: The Symbol of Chandigarh
Location: Sector 1, Chandigarh, Punjab
Every time I dropped by Chandigarh, I remember to have seen a unique hand-like structure turning round and round with the wind. Inquisitive to know what this structure stood for, I inquired and was amazed to know that such a small monument had a very big meaning attached to it. Standing at a height of 26 metres from the ground, the Open Hand Monument is located in the Capitol Complex in the beautiful city of Chandigarh. It was built by the famous architect, Le Corbusier.
The Open Hand Monument is one of the most notable structures in the city. It consists of a hand-like structure standing on a trench which rotates like a weather cock with the flow of the wind. Made up of metal sheets, it weighs around 50 tonnes. Unlike a weather cock, though, this hand-like structure holds special significance of conveying a social message to the world. Le Corbusier designed the open hand to convey the message of openness of ideas and of peace and unity.
The Open Hand monument is the official emblem of Chandigarh. The purpose behind the construction of this open hand structure was for the people to have at least one place in the city where they could freely discuss the problems concerning Chandigarh and eventually take the right decisions for the betterment of the city. A small monument, but a very big purpose.
